White Mushrooms
In certain places, you will undoubtably run into little white Mushrooms. These guys do not attack you, (but the battle music still plays, and the menu turns red) but rather they do odd motions. What they are doing is actually a form of charades. what they are doing is giving you a hint of what is wrong with them. For example, a Mushroom might lean back and fan itself. This should let you know that it is hot. what does one do when one gets hot? You cool yourself down. Thus, while the Mushroom is performing this fanning motion, you would hit it with a Blizzard spell. If done correctly, you are given tech points, and the Mushroom will perform another movement. Below is the movements the white Mushroom performs, as well as the spell you should hit it with when it does.

Now, when you perform the spells that the Mushroom asks for three times, you will be rewarded. However, there are two different ways of getting rewards.
The first way (shown in the left table) is by successfully casting the same spell on the mushroom three times. If you do this, you will also get a Spell Arts item of the spell you cast. If you manage to collect a Spell Art for each spell, take them back to Merlin for Goofy's Dream Shield.
The second reward (shown in the right table) shows what you can get if you just hit it three times with the correct spell. An example would be if the Mushroom asks for Fire, Cure, and Gravity. If you do these correctly, you get the rewarded. The major difference between the two is you do not get a Spell Arts this way.

This is perhaps the easiest way to get the Mystery Goo item. You need six of these in order to Synthesize the Ultima Weapon for Sora. Three are for other items in the Synthesis listing, and then there are three needed to gain the Ultima weapon itself. Placing a Lucky Strike on all three party members increases the chances of it being dropped.
The locations of the White Mushrooms are easy to know. It is getting these guys to appear that can be tricky. If you enter an area, and they do not appear, you must defeat the entire enemy set for that particular place. Now move two places (maps) away, and try again. Only if you completely defeat the enemy set and move two places away, will the enemy set reset itself. Also a good way to do this, is leave the world and return. In places like Deep Jungle, Camp, it is easy since you are provided with a save point. Leaving the world automatically resets the enemies.
Also getting the right spells can be a bit frustrating. The hardest ones to get are Stop, Cure, and Gravity Arts. The Cure Arts is easier to obtain in the Deep Jungle, Camp. Aero and Stop, hit the End of the World, Linked Worlds. And for Gravity, both locations for Deep Jungle are the good ones. Below is the location of the White Mushrooms.
*Traverse Town, Red Room (Before rescue)
*Deep Jungle, Camp
*Deep Jungle, Tree House
*Halloween Town, Graveyard
*Hades Cup, 6th Seed (Appearance only. Drops no items)
*End of the World, Linked Worlds
*Atlantica, Sunken Ship
*Atlantica, Undersea Cave
*Agrabah, Treasure Room
*Wonderland, Lotus Forest
Black Fungus
Unlike the friendly White Mushrooms, their cousins the Black Fungus are quite violent. They will attack, and don't go down very easily. They will frequently emmit a poisonous gas, that can do heavy damage to your party. When they ommit the gas, step back, and let the attack finish beofore going in again.
When they turn a light grey color, they become immune to all attacks. Just step back, and let them go, until they change back. It might seem like a great time to get in position for the first strike, but they can still hit you with their poison, while they are immune.
On a rare occasion, the defeat of one of these creatures will yeild the Mystery Mold item. This is not a Synthesis item, but it can be sold for a whopping 9,999 Munny! That alone makes it worth while to try and get at least one. But the chances are not too good. If you can encounter them more frequently, and have the Lucky Strike equiped to all characters, you will get a better chance of getting it.
The way you defeat the Black Fungus also factors into your reward. If you make the final blow with a critical hit, there is a 50% chance of getting a Mystery Mold. If your final blow is a combo, (Ars Arcancum, Trinity Limit, etc) there is a 30% chance of items being dropped. Of the 30%, 10% chance for a Mystery Mold. My suggestion for a weapon if you are going after this item would be either the Divine Rose, or Oathkeeper. Both a capable of dealing a succession of critical blows.
Below is the list of Black Fungus appearances. As with the White Mushrooms, the rules on getting them to appear is the same.
*Agrabah, Bazaar
*Halloween Town, Moonlight Hill
*Pegasus Cup, 4th Seed (Appearance only. Drops no items)
*Hades Cup, 36th Seed (Appearance only. Drops no items)
*Hollow Bastion, Cell
*End of the World, Linked Worlds
Rare Truffles
Rare Truffles are another friendly type of mushroom. They are found in certain areas, jumping about. This jumping is the clue. Rare Truffles love to be in the air. It is up to you to get them, and keep them there. This is a lot easier said than done. The one thing you will want to do is remove Sora's Aerial Sweep ability. When one hits the ground, knock it in the air. As it rises up, GENTLY tap the followed by the . If you strike either button too hard, the strike will send your Truffle flying, or you will land too hard. The idea is to keep the Truffle almost straight above you, while maintaining Sora's jump/attacks. If you manage to accomplish a string of successful juggles, you will be rewarded for your efforts.
# of juggles |
Rewards |
10 |
Mystery Goo (40%) Elixir |
50 |
Mystery Goo Elixir Shiitake Rank |
100 |
Mystery Goo Elixir Matsutake Rank |
The Shiitake Rank, and Matsutake Rank are just rewards showing your mastery of juggling. Both can be sold of course. Shiitake goes for 100 Munny, while the Matsutake goes for 500 Munny.
Below are the locations of these acrobatic guys. See if you can get to 100 juggles!
*Halloween Town, Bridge
*Neverland, Ship's Deck
*Herculs Cup, 6th Seed (Appearance only. Drops no items)
*Hades Cup, 46th Seed (Appearance only. Drops no items)
*Monstro, Throat
*End of the World, Linked Worlds
A trick to get your Mushrooms to appear
There are a couple of ways to get Mushrooms to appear more frequently. As withe the affore mentioned leaving the world, and returning: If you enter a area for the first time on that visit, you have a better chance of them appearing, than if you do the two areas away deal. In the case of the Deep Jungle and Atlantica, check both areas before you go. This way you get a double first entrance, and thus double the chance of getting them.
But there is also the trick above all others. As you might ahve noticed, all three types of mushrooms are enemy sets for End of the World, Linked Worlds. In the room right after this, there is a save point. (Right before the final confrontation) From this save, go into the room, and see if there are any mushrooms. If there aren't, perform a soft reset, and try again. If you get a mushroom enemy, and you get the reward you were after, save the game. Then do another soft reset, and load the game. A soft reset also resets the enemy sets, and you do not ahve to worry about leaving the world and returning. This is simply the best way to get the items you want. The only downside is it is right before the final confrontation.
